Safe Mercury / Silver Amalgam Filling Removal
Evaluation of existing silver-colored fillings and discussion of replacement when appropriate, with training by Dr. Hal Huggins and IAOMT.
What This Treatment Involves
Our office provides thorough examinations of existing silver-colored amalgam fillings. Dr. Piela has received training from Dr. Hal Huggins and the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) in safe mercury amalgam removal, and the practice is IAOMT-accredited. Intact amalgam fillings in good condition do not routinely need removal. When replacement is clinically indicated or chosen by the patient, decisions are made collaboratively based on dental need, structural integrity, and individual circumstances.
General 3-Stage Restorative Care Overview
Discussion of medical history, oral health, and necessary 2D/3D diagnostic imaging.
Collaborative selection of biocompatible materials, conservative techniques, and care steps.
Placement of the restoration and periodic review to ensure long-term stability and comfort.
When Considered & What Evaluation Involves
Evaluation involves clinical inspection and radiographs to assess margin breakdown, recurrent cavities, and structural cracks.
Considerations & Clinical Context
The FDA notes that intact amalgam fillings in healthy teeth generally should not be removed unnecessarily, as the removal process can temporarily release particles and removes small amounts of healthy tooth structure.
Our Approach at the Practice
Dr. Piela has been trained by Dr. Hal Huggins and the IAOMT in safe mercury amalgam removal protocols. Replacements use tooth-colored biocompatible composite or ceramic materials.
