Oral Cancer Screening
An examination for unusual changes in the mouth, with further evaluation or referral when needed.
What This Treatment Involves
An oral cancer screening may include visual and manual examination of the mouth and nearby tissues. Findings determine whether further assessment or referral is appropriate. Routine oral cancer screening is a component of comprehensive dental examinations, helping identify unusual tissue changes, persistent white or red patches, or firm lumps that may warrant closer observation or specialist referral.
Preventive Care & Examination Process
Review of daily home care, material sensitivities, and preventive goals.
Thorough assessment of teeth, gums, and oral soft tissues using conservative standards.
Guidance on daily maintenance and discussion of any necessary follow-up care.
When Considered & What Evaluation Involves
Visual and manual examination of the lips, cheek lining, palate, tongue borders, and lymph nodes. Any lesion present for more than two weeks is flagged for follow-up.
Considerations & Clinical Context
A clinical screening examination identifies areas of concern but does not definitively diagnose or rule out oral cancer on its own. Suspicious findings require biopsy or evaluation by an oral pathologist.
Our Approach at the Practice
Screenings are performed routinely during periodic checkups to encourage early detection of mucosal irregularities.
